A man with short dark hair sits on a stool in an artist studio, wearing a black t-shirt and black pants. Behind him are several large abstract canvas paintings on the wall and floor, along with a worktable holding paintbrushes and bottles.

Otto

Otto grew up around his uncle's sign-painting business in the American South, spending afternoons after school watching hand-lettering and brushwork up close — a background that gave him an early, intuitive feel for line, weight, and confident mark-making. His paintings are built from a small number of large, committed gestures, worked in a single tone so the focus stays entirely on movement, rhythm, and the physical decision behind each stroke. He works quickly and rarely reworks a mark once it's down, treating the immediacy of the gesture as the whole point of the piece. He goes by a single name in the studio, keeping the focus on the work itself. "One good line says more than ten careful ones," he says. "I'd rather commit than perfect."
