Whitfield grew up outside Austin, Texas, and studied fine art before spending several years restoring old adobe and plaster buildings across the Southwest — work that left her with a lasting fascination for aged surfaces, lime wash, and the way pigment settles unevenly into raw material. That background shows up directly in her canvases: heavily textured grounds built up with plaster-like layers of gesso and marble dust, over which she works in a restrained, sun-bleached palette of bone, sand, blush, and warm taupe, punctuated by a single confident passage of black or charcoal that anchors the composition.

Her process is slow and physical — she works flat on the floor or against the wall, building surface before she ever introduces color, sanding back between layers so the final piece carries a weathered, almost architectural quality, closer to a wall that's been lived with for decades than a canvas painted in one sitting. She often works in loose series tied to a feeling rather than a place — "quiet rooms," she calls them — and resists adding more than two or three gestural marks per piece, treating restraint as the hardest and most important skill in the work.

She now runs a studio out of a converted barn, and describes her aesthetic simply: "I'm not trying to fill the canvas. I'm trying to find the one or two marks it actually needs, and leave everything else alone."
