Alexander Kleinberg

Kleinberg trained at an art academy in Düsseldorf before relocating to New York, drawn by the city's history of gestural, large-scale abstraction. His work is physical and immediate — big, sweeping movements across the canvas, built up through repeated layering and reworking until a piece finds its own internal balance. He often paints standing, moving around the canvas rather than working from a fixed position, treating the whole body as part of the mark-making process. He describes his practice as a kind of ongoing conversation between the European training he grew up with and the looser, more instinctive energy he found in American abstraction after he moved. "I still think in German sometimes when I'm planning," he jokes, "but I paint in English."
