Danny Cruz

Cruz grew up in a big, loud, extended family in Houston, surrounded by the visual language of local businesses, packaging, and roadside signage — and that upbringing shows up directly in his work. He paints in bold, flat colour blocks with graphic outlines, borrowing the visual vocabulary of advertising and commercial print, but pointing his attention at small, everyday, easily overlooked subjects rather than celebrities or products. He builds his halftone textures and shading by hand rather than mechanically, a deliberate choice that keeps the work feeling painted rather than printed. He's upbeat about the genre's playful reputation and leans into it. "Pop Art gets called shallow sometimes," he says, "but I think noticing the stuff nobody else bothers to look at is actually a pretty deep move."
